India: Fake auto parts take toll of lives; deprive government and industry of revenue - Thursday, December 06, 2007
In India, fake auto parts is a thriving business, with a recent study by industry bodies Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (Siam) and Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India (Acma) estimating its size at between Rs4,400 crore and Rs6,300 crore. That means fakes account for between 32% and 47% of the industry, by value.

The problem is that the counterfeit products today have been designed to look like almost perfect replicas of the genuine product, so people don't know a counterfeit when they see one.

Organisations Minimize

European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) was established in 2002 and constitutes a key part of the European Union’s strategy to establish and maintain a high uniform level of civil aviation safety in Europe. The Agency has been given the power to carry out certain executive tasks related to aviation safety, such as the certification of aeronautical products and organisations involved in their design, production and maintenance. They are responsible for certification of aircraft, engines and parts to improve aviation safety, and have working agreements with China, Israel, Canada, United States, Russia and Brazil.

 

Federal Aviation Agency (FAA) is a part of the US Department of Transportation. Their mission is to provide the safest, most efficient aerospace system in the world. Aviation Safety is the FAA organisation responsible for the certification, production approval, and continued airworthiness of aircrafts and FAA work closely with industry to make sure that unapproved parts don’t threaten today's aviation safety. Motor and Equipment Manufacturer Association (MEMA) has exclusively represented and served manufacturers of motor vehicle components and systems for the original equipment (OE) and aftermarket segments of the light vehicle and heavy duty industries since 1904. The Brand Protection Council, created by MEMA, is set up to deal with counterfeiting, non-compliant products and Intellectual Property Rights.

The Automotive Aftermarket Suppliers Association (AASA)  was created by the Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association (MEMA) with the task of focusing on key industry issues that affect its aftermarket parts manufacturers members, counterfeiting of automotive parts being a major part of their current concern.
